Ray’s Nerdy Neighbor
Ray had always been a friendly guy, though he usually had only one male friend at a time.  Raised by his frail mother and an only child, he’d always acted a bit apologetic for imposing his size and the bulging muscles he’d developed playing sports and such, but that didn’t stop him from trying to make friends, and that was the problem now that he had moved to his new apartment in Brooklyn: Ray couldn’t seem to make a friend with any of the other guys in the old apartment house or on the block even.

The fact was that the last two years, working in building trades and construction, had done little to diminish the heroic build young Ray Demetriou now possessed, so that even a competitive muscle-head might find his 6’4” 250 lb. frame intimidating.  His handsome dark features, black curly hair, and arctic blue eyes did not help the situation either.  Failure to launch, you say?  At 26 years old, Raimond Achilles Demetriou Jr. had never slept with a girl, been on a date, or even tried to ask a girl out, but that perhaps had more to do with his near-constant obsession with “finding a real friend or little buddy” first.  It wasn’t that girls weren’t “interesting”, it was that the gentle giant felt it his sworn duty to help others first…

You see, not only was Ray always trying to be friendly, but he always wanted to be playing the role of “protector and friend” to smaller guys, especially a smaller guy who might be into science, science fiction, comic books: that kind of stuff…A sort of weaker side-kick.  Although he was completely unaware of it, Ray Demetriou had a profound superhero complex bordering on obsession, associated with an inner drive to shelter or protect a smaller buddy or side-kick from “danger”.  As a result, nearly every male friend Ray would try to make would quickly tire of his eager beaver attitude, groping paws and arms, bear hugs, and overbearing presence at parties, the movies, or anyplace in public that Ray thought “danger might be lurking”.  That was usually the line that convinced any potential friend of Ray’s that he was bonkers.  Not gay, not a psycho or even a stalker: just plain bonkers from Mars…or maybe Krypton.

And regarding the gay thing…
Just after his mom had died, Ray was living in the family house in Kew Gardens alone and commuting to Manhattan to carry bricks and mix mud for a stone mason when one of his little buddy attempts (unbeknownst to Ray) had been with a little gay dude from Astoria.  Personal trainer and event planner, Evangelos Pappas had been quite swept off his feet when he had first met Ray riding on the A Train after work.  Two weeks into their friendship, while watching an action film on Ray’s couch, the little Greek had tried to pull Ray into a neck-lock for a kiss, which Ray misinterpreted as an invitation wrestle: just one of the many high school sports Ray had excelled at.  An excited Ray Demetriou wrapped his huge arms around Evangelos trim body and began to squeeze the small dude in a massive bear hug combined with a grapevine leg lock…Evangelos also misinterpreted the now rapidly unfolding action, thinking Ray was actually trying to kill him in a homophobic rage and began to squirm and struggle in earnest while wrapped in the python-like arms of Ray Demetrios and suddenly passing-out in a fit of Greek pique, like some swooning maiden about to be devoured by the dragon.

When Evan awoke on Ray’s couch with the gigantic muscleman looming over him, the frightened lad leapt to his feet, fled the old house, and never looked-back.  Ray was sad for a week, thinking that he had done something to hurt Evan’s feelings since Evan never returned his numerous calls and lengthy messages of apology.  Finally the number was disconnected and that was Ray all alone again.  A year later Ray had sold the family house, invested the money with a High School friend on Wall Street, and moved to a building in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn for a fresh start.  Stone masonry being an on again off again occupation, Ray had planned to take the winter off to get his life in order, make new friends, work-out, and other stuff like that.

It had been six or more weeks since Ray had moved to the one-bedroom studio on the sixth floor with no new friend…Here he was, on the first night of three months of leave, still was stuck at home every night reading comic books, watching crappy action flicks and slinging his kettle bell weights around the apartment like and loony baggage handler at LaGuardia.  The noise of the weights clanging together is probably what brought the nerdy neighbor to Ray’s door in the first place: The red-faced young neighbor looked furious as he stood on Ray’s doorstep, glaring up at the grinning, towering, Ray Demetriou.  The compact blond man was there to unleash a string of complaints regarding Ray’s choice of loud action movies, his thunderous work boots on the stairs, and asking if like Quasimodo, Ray had a bell tower in his apartment.  It was clear the man was upset, and most people would have braced for the tongue-lashing to come, but for Ray’s brain this the little blond man on his doorstep was like a dream of brotherly love at first sight.

At 27 years of age, Dr. Simon Hedgrenn PHD stood barely 5’2” tall, with a shock of white-blond hair, cut long on the top and shaved to almost bare skin on the sides.  His jet-black glasses set off his pale complexion and squared Scandinavian features, and the white t-shirt and blue jeans the man wore revealed a gym-toned body.  In spite of his size, the neighbor was in very good physical condition.  This, in spite of the aura of helpless “nerd” Ray could almost feel coming out of the guy.  Of course, the blindingly white lab coat Hedgrenn was wearing over a Wally Cleaver 1950s uniform of t-shirt, thick glasses, black loafers, and classic Levi-Strauss dungarees, did much to complete the picture.  It was almost as if Ray had custom ordered this neighbor and delivery had been made to his front door.

The glasses and lab coat really gave the man a mad-scientist look straight out of a 1950s horror movie.  Before his neighbor could speak, Ray grinned his best big toothy  superhero grin at the little red-faced man, stuck his huge paw out, and asked in his kindest voice: “Hi!  Ummm…hey, you’re my neighbor the doctor right?  The one who bought all three of the other apartments on this floor and hooked them up?”  “Gee, it’s great to meet ya!” the big man gushed, still oblivious to the red blotches standing out on Hedgrenn’s pale cheeks.  But just as it appeared the neighbor was about to explode, an odd look passed across the small man’s face, as if another more pressing thought or idea had infiltrated his juggernaut of neighborly nagging, causing it to lose steam just before launch.

After a moment’s hesitation the compact man took Ray’s offered hand, looked up to a towering Ray Demetriou and said: “Ah, yes, excuse me, but yes, I am your neighbor on this floor, Dr. Simon Hedgrenn.  I specialize in bio-chemical research with an emphasis on human behavior modification, but of course that is of no consequence to you…Look, I am sorry to disturb your musical practice, tap dancing, or boxing, or whatever it is you do at night, but I seem to have a little trouble with my hot water next door and I was wondering if you had the same problem?”  The young doctor was peering over the top of his think black glasses at Ray as he spoke, giving Ray the slightly uncomfortable feeling that he had come to the door stark naked, suddenly glancing down just to be sure that was not the case.  It wasn’t.  Still, Ray could not get over the fact that the little man seemed to be looking through him as much as at him.  Ray gave it little thought.  It made little difference to Ray Demetriou: He had finally found his new little buddy!

The smaller man cleared his throat, startling Ray, who had been standing there in the door, spaced-out, lost in his obsessive pursuit of a pal to protect.  Suddenly Ray blushed a deep red at being caught daydreamong like that, and before he could think about what he was doing, Demetriou pulled the man over the threshold and into his small studio before leaning out into and glancing down the obviously empty corridor and raising one silky black eyebrow in a circumspect glance that would have put Clark Kent to shame any day of the week.  The door slammed hard enough to make the chimes ring, but aside from the two neighbors now getting acquainted, there was not a single soul was on the 6th floor to hear it or witness their meeting.

It took more than a small effort for Dr. Simon Hedgrenn PHD to cover his reaction to the  sight that greeted him upon being dragged into Ray Demetriou’s small studio: It was full of odd-shaped metal weights of varying sizes, an enormous flat-screened television connected to a white lap-top computer, a sink full of dead dishes, and what appeared to be two easy chairs and a couch, although none of the furniture was visible for the heaps and dozens of pairs of bluejeans, white wife beater t-shirts, insulated socks, old work boots, and plain work shirts in only two colors: pale blue and fire-engine red.  Without releasing his grip on the doctor’s hand, Ray had guided his blond neighbor to the invisible couch, swatting aside a drift of work clothes and depositing the smaller man in the gap he’d just made at one end.  Ray moved to the window, leaving the doctor like a bag of groceries on the clothing-engulfed couch.  Needless to say the drift of shirts and jeans immediately tumbled back upon the man, nearly burying him in the process.

As the young doctor cleared away the clothing covering his lap, he became acutely aware of two things.  One, that contrary to the sea of unwashed working-mans clothing in the place, the aroma of the tiny apartment was like some amazing spice or scent with tinges of pine needles and cedar-wood mixed with beeswax, leather and a potent masculine musk that made the fine blond hairs on Dr. Simon Hedgrenn’s neck rise as his flaring nostrils took in Ray Demetriou’s pheromonic male stink.  (Other things were rising as well, but the doctor quickly covered that with a pair of Ray’s bluejeans, adjusting himself to the sudden arrival of his erection.)  The second thing Dr. Hedgrenn took note of was the outline and especially the backside of Ray Demetriou as he had now turned away headed for the sink to test the hot water.  Hedgrenn’s breath caught in his throat at the view: twin mounds of gluteus maximus wrestled with one another for supremacy beneath the threadbare blue fabric of Demetriou’s skin-tight bluejeans.  It appeared that the only thing keeping these globes of muscular magic in check was the ultra tight pair of white briefs showing through, beneath the faded dungarees.  Through it all Ray had been babbling on and on as to how he was so glad to meet the doctor, that he had no family left, or friends in his new neighborhood, and how that was a drag since he had just told his stonemason boss that he was taking the next three months off to “get his head together” and paid up his rent and bills through the middle of March…

Time slowed to a hypnotic trickle for young Dr. Hedgrenn as he listened to the young man, and came to realize what had to happen next.  The doctor smiled to himself as a foolproof plan formed in his shrewd mind; meanwhile, his wide green eyes devoured Ray Demetriou’s remarkable backside, tracing the tapering v-flare of his latissimus muscles flowing down to the man’s unnaturally narrow hips, too narrow it seemed to hold Ray’s bulging gluteus muscles.  The twin globes capped-off the Greek’s turgid thighs and calves as they widened into tree-trunks and bowling balls as his workboot encased feet rooted the mighty oak of a man to any spot he chanced to occupy.  Yes, he will be a most extraordinary subject, thought the clever neighbor.

The doctor came out of this splendid reverie as Ray turned and spoke while off-handedly adjusting his jeans-clad bulge directly at eye level with the seated doctor: “Gee doc, it seems like my water’s plenty hot!”  “Maybe you got a bum pipe.” Said Ray, with a sheepish grin, “I gotta plumber friend if ya want him ta have a look!”  “Or maybe I can help you, but I don’t know a whole lot about pipes and such.”  Ray’s thick black eyebrows raised in a sort of apologetic facial shrug that implied he was eager to help, ignorant to act.  A perfect subject, thought the smiling doctor…

The doctor was so happy with this result he almost ditched his new-made plan and invited the stunning specimen over to his place on the spot.  But no, there would be plenty of time for such diversions once this amazing subject was properly dosed, prepped, conditioned, and of course secured…for the subject’s own safety, as well as that of Dr. Simon Hedgrenn, he thought.  The doctor rose abruptly, thanked a somewhat dubious Ray Demetriou and departed the premises, replying curtly that, if Ray were indeed free, the doctor would be very glad to have his assistance at 6AM tomorrow across the hall.  The doctor had very nearly said “in my lab” which of course would have spoiled the surprise Hedgrenn hoped he would see on Ray Demetriou’s face when he awoke to discover the real reason the doctor wanted his company tomorrow morning.  Once again apartment doors opened and slammed and Ray found himself happily slinging his kettle bell weights around like the mere toys they were in his strong hands, smiling as he watched another lousy action flick and thought about helping his new little buddy in the morning.

Simon Hedgrenn didn’t sleep much that night.  There were many preparations to be made, equipment to be assembled and tested: some sterilized, some calibrated, and some merely tested for strength and security.  These preparations went on well into the wee hours until the Dr. performed his final task for the evening: preparing a small vial of an exceedingly rare plant extract, a slightly pinkish fluid that was odorless, tasteless, and dosed in very small quantity. Hedgrenn himself had seen this same formula used on a 400-pound Great Ape:an alpha male at that.  1/300,000th of a microgram had put the powerful jungle hominid into a trance-like state of paralysis in a matter of 30 seconds that lasted for exactly one hour and fifteen minutes.

During that time the Ape’s semen would then be “harvested” through “natural means” meaning the specialist on site would actually masturbate the paralyzed specimen to ejaculation as a part of a study to determine if harvesting through natural means yielded a better quality sperm sample, etc.  However, an unexpected side-effect of the drug had cropped-up: Although the drugged specimen exhibited “enthusiastic” display of semi-conscious sexual arousal, and even a sort of hypnotic state of euphoric joy, the creature was utterly incapable of ejaculation in spite of the earnest, almost embarrassing, attempts on the part of the attending vet to the contrary.

At the end of the allotted time, the scientists had had to pull back as the creature regained motor control and rejoined the rest of his hominid troupe in the bush.  Follow-up studies showed that although the paralytic effects of the drug had disappeared with no lingering side effects, the once-dominant ape had without reason or any obvious power struggle within the troupe males, become a submissive troupe member, sexually servicing both female AND male members of the troupe.  As time passed it’s sexual appetites grew nearly unquenchable:  That was the point that Dr. Simon Hedgrenn PHD had begun researching the mysterious plant, it’s narcotic/hypnotic compounds, and it’s intriguing side effects.
